The old monarch, is Victor-Emmanuel III, who lived from 1869 to 1947. He is 74 when the german army occupies Italy in 1943, which makes him a very old monarch [le vieux monarque] indeed. Vexed and angered, the fuhrer, by way of reprisals, orders the arrest of high dignitaries and even the king:
[P.59] As early as tomorrow, Hitler exclaimed in front of his generals, I will send someone to Rome with orders to arrest all the government, the king, the heir to the throne, and all the rest of them, then Badoglio and his crew.

Fearing the reaction of the Germans to the armistice, the king decides to leave Rome:

Victorr-Emmanuel III was forced to abdicate after the war:
