Between the two distant leaders
During an eclipse of the sun...
History
In the present quatrain, 'between the two distant leaders' has a double significance: it tells us that the two monarchs are far from each other in terms of distance, but most of all, their views of the world are diametrally opposed.
Here, we have the meeting of two leaders of the world during a major historical event.
During World War II, Hitler had finally decided to attack Russia and Staline appealed to the allies. During a summit meeting held in Moscow, the two leaders, Churchill and Staline discussed the opportunity to open a second front in Europe. This meeting, that occurred during an eclipse of the sun, was of the highest importance to Staline, but Churchill was rather in favor of a landing in the Mediterranean area:

|
[P.323] Moscow, August 15, 1942
After a stop in Cairo, where he met british military brass, Churchill headed for Moscow. His plane, an american bomber Liberator and the two aircrafts transporting diplomatic and military advisors, were escorted, when they landed, by the air force of the Red Army. During the four days of talk, the british Prime Minister explained thoroughly the anglo-american plan to throw the Germans and Italians out of North Africa, and prepare an attack on the European continent, in the south of Italy. Churchill's plans did not satisfy Staline: threatened by the Germans already at the doors of Stalingrad, he was asking for the opening of a second front in Europe.

The eclipse occurred August 12, first day of the conference:
